In the ten years we've been designing and installing HVAC solutions for MRI scanners, we've seen the same mistakes being made again and again.
We first noticed this issue about a decade ago, while working on maintenance and breakdown jobs. We'd see ventilation systems that simply didn't work. If and when they did work, they were extremely costly to maintain. Rather than questioning the status quo, other HVAC service providers simply took note of how these systems were designed, and just copied them.
Call us crazy, but when our clients place their trust in us, we believe they deserve better than 'mediocre' – even if it is the prevailing standard at the time!
So we took an innovative approach and committed to developing new, reliable and sustainable solutions. After much development and testing, we revolutionised our designs and improved our installations.
Not long after, we began to see other contractors replicating our new MRI ventilation design.
We didn't mind. We knew it worked better and cost clients less.

THE CLIENT
ENGINEERING SOLUTION
The Queensland Government's Department of Transport & Main Roads customer service centre in Toowoomba is focused on creating a single integrated transport network accessible to everyone.
CHALLENGE
PREH was engaged to supply and install six replacement ducted split air conditioner units, which serviced the south wing area of the department, across three levels. Included in the contract was the removal and disposal of the redundant units and associated consumables.
All works were performed during normal business hours in order to keep costs down. This was carried out with minimal disturbance to the client's employees, who were still working in the office area during the installation.

CASE STUDY: MRI COOLING
GYMPIE RADIOLOGY
THE CLIENT
Gympie Radiology provides local doctors and their patients with comprehensive imaging and specialised services across a wide range of modalities.
In 2015, their commitment to offering the most advanced diagnostic technology saw them acquire and install a 3T GE Signa Pioneer. This machine represents the cutting edge in MRI imaging technology and was the first of its kind to be installed in Australia.
CHALLENGE
The client asked PREH to design, supply and install a complete cooling and exhaust system for their new MRI Examination and Equipment rooms.
PREH designed a cooling system utilising two chillers. This configuration facilitates maximum up time for the MRI, allows for power saving when the MRI is not performing scans and ensures against downtime in the case of chiller failure.
The design also incorporated a single CRAC unit (Computer Room Air Conditioner), for controlling the humidity and temperature in the Examination and Equipment rooms.
This solution was a natural fit for the patient focused approach of the centre's radiologists and technicians, who are committed to providing patients with the highest standards of care in a comfortable environment.

ENGINEERING SOLUTION
The cooling system our engineers designed consisted of one chiller, with multi circuits and stages, facilitating maximum cooling uptime and no downtime in the case of a compressor failure.
The system also ticked the hospital's box for energy efficiency, by entering power saving mode when the MRI is not performing scans. In addition, PREH supplied a CRAC unit (Computer Room Air Conditioner), to control the humidity and temperature in the Examination and Equipment rooms.
The successful installation of the MRI cooling system is saving around 1000 patients a year having to travel to Cairns or Townsville for MRI scans and is provide a more timely diagnosis for conditions such as strokes, trauma and cancer.

MT ISA HOSPITAL
In 2015, the Mt Isa Hospital received approval for the purchase of an MRI machine.
THE CLIENT
The client asked PREH to design, supply and install a complete cooling and exhaust system for their MRI Examination and Equipment rooms. While the fulfilment of the brief had inherent challenges due to the hospital's remote location, even more difficult was the tight project schedule, which required the cooling system to be installed prior to the MRI machine's delivery.

Zero downtime in transitioning from DX to Chilled Water, for leading Paper Mill.
THE CLIENT
ENGINEERING SOLUTION
The International Paper Mill prides itself on being on the cutting edge of technology and innovation for their industry. The client continually investigates new technology platforms across their manufacturing footprint and beyond, requiring reliable cooling solutions.
CHALLENGE
When this Brisbane Paper Mill approached PREH to convert their main plant cooling from Direct Expansion (DX) to Chilled Water Cooling, the team knew the transition would need to be carefully and strategically planned to ensure production was not compromised in any way.
The main plant cooling’s transition from DX to Chilled Water was progressively implemented over 5 years, as the DX systems went offline or failed. The installation was achieved through strategic planning and careful scheduling, to ensure no downtime was caused to the company’s multi-million dollar activities.
6 years on, the Chilled Water cooling system continues to generate significant savings in repair and maintenance and the client is extremely pleased.

ENGINEERING SOLUTION
PREH designed and constructed a control system for the company's air conditioning/monitoring hubs and was able to operate in a remote area efficiently, meet milestones and not only meet, but exceed the client's OH&S regulatory requirements.

AUSTRALIA PACIFIC LNG
Australia Pacific LNG is the country’s largest producer of coal seam gas (CSG). It supplies and processes CSG into liquefied natural gas, to serve a growing export market.
THE CLIENT
CHALLENGE
PREH was tasked with engineering and installing all control systems for a large majority of the company's control rooms, including; four remote control rooms/projects and one large control room, consisting of three smaller projects.
To achieve this, PREH had to temporarily relocate to the remote mining town of Miles in regional Queensland, where the client's operations were based. In addition to this, Australia Pacific LNG has a stringent focus on health, safety and environmental best practices, due to their scale and continued growth. PREH needed to complete the work, while adhering to these requirements.
30% energy saving for Brisbane healthcare provider.
ENGINEERING SOLUTION
Various efficiency measures were incorporated, including a hot aisle containment system to reduce energy usage, a free cooling option to the chiller system (to generate around 25% free cooling during the cooler periods) and a two zone, Vesda Fire monitoring system. The entire cooling solution was covered by a 7 year comprehensive maintenance regime, with guaranteed 2hrs response time - facilitating maximum up time.
During the last winter period, the data centre chillers were running 75% of the time on free cooling only, which reduced the client's power bill by 30%.

BRISBANE DATA CENTRE: QLD
Brisbane Data Centre is an international healthcare company focused on delivering quality, independent services in medical diagnostics and multidisciplinary medical practices. Employing 31,000 people around Australia, Brisbane Data Centre offers services including: Laboratory medicine/pathology, radiology, general practice, occupational medical services, clinical trials and food and water testing.
THE CLIENT
CHALLENGE
PREH designed, engineered and installed a complete turn key data centre solution, within three months. This included: data racks, in-row coolers, a cooling system, electrical services, UPS, fire system and sprinkler modifications.
Data Centre successfully installed in a container, for easy relocation.
ENGINEERING SOLUTION
PREH installed two Rittal Chillers for redundancy and maximum up time. All of the pipe work ran from the computer room floor into the container, ensuring minimal impact on the available space.

SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY: GOLD COAST
Southern Cross University is a vibrant, contemporary Australian university with students from more than 60 countries, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The University has a strong student focus and was listed among Times Higher Education's 150 world's best young universities for 2016.
THE CLIENT
CHALLENGE
PREH's scope was to install two chillers and all associated pipe work for a data centre. This was built in a container to facilitate quick relocation in the event of a flood. The solution needed to be reliable, efficient and scalable, while ensuring the University's data was kept secure.

QXR SPRINGFIELD ENGINEERING SOLUTION
PREH installed the complete practice solution ahead of deadline – including a cooling and exhaust solution for the client's MRI, CT, Xray, Operating Theatre, Doctor's Office and Ultrasound facilities.
The team not only rectified the engineering issues that were discovered but also installed three chilled water AHU's with heater banks and independent controls for each room, ensuring operators were easily able to adjust environmental controls for patient comfort. The MRI also was serviced with chilled water cooling via a heat exchanger and temperature/humidity control via a CRAC unit in the equipment room.

Queensland Xray has more than 40 practices across Brisbane, Ipswich, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, the Darling Downs, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns. They are proud to employ some of the most experienced radiologists and nuclear imaging specialists in the state and are focused on providing the best service, care and clinical outcomes for their patients.

QXR SPRINGFIELD CHALLENGES
The installation of Queensland Xray's cooling and exhaust system presented a number of challenges, not least because it was a large job (valued at over $500,000) and needed to be completed within a very short period of time.
While installing the required system, PREH identified a number of engineering issues which were a legacy of the original building owners. These had to be mitigated to ensure the success of the finished system.

ENGINEERING SOLUTION
XRadiology Australia is a privately owned Queensland company which seeks to change the nature of medical imaging service provision, with fast, accurate and responsive service. They have built a technologically advanced practice where patient care is their top priority.
PREH redesigned the entire floor's control design with a proprietary strategic design philosophy, that has now been adopted internationally by major supplier Philips.
Due to the tight deadline, PREH scaled up quickly and was able to achieve the install in just 4 weeks – half the normal time!
CHALLENGE
The practice required full control design and installation, however due to difficult circumstances for the client, an unavoidable two month delay occurred at the start of the project. It became apparent an expedited solution would be required if patient care was not to be affected.

Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) is a service provider for non-government schools that are also not part of the Catholic school system. These types of schools have been operating within Queensland communities for more than 150 years.

ENGINEERING SOLUTION
PREH appointed a dedicated Project Manager as the client's single point of contact, guaranteeing open availability for questions, updates and discussions of variations.
Our Project Manager immediately assumed total control of the project, coordinating and managing a diverse range of trades, including electricity, fire, plumbing and mechanical services.
PREH also liaised directly with building management for access, along with engineers, manufacturers and suppliers, enabling the client to be completely hands off throughout the process. The room was successfully built with a fully customised, tailored solution (also designed by PREH) and was delivered on time, within budget and to all energy requirements.
The client was so pleased with the finished result that PREH has become a regular service provider, handing all subsequent jobs, from Sydney to Brisbane. In addition, the design was recognised with an award and the client continues to use the data centre as a promotional/sales tool, gladly offering clients a personal tour.

The client approached PREH with a clear, but challenging four point brief: project manage the installation of a 200kw capacity data centre in the company's existing offices, within a 3 month timeframe. The unique twist? The glass walls of the room would make the data centre visible to all employees and guests, so creating an aesthetic that would transform the data centre into a showcase feature, was paramount.
